VAULTStorage density

VAULT is built for data that grows and stays. Enterprise drives with conventional magnetic recording, from VAULT-176 additionally NVMe for metadata and operating system, plus sufficient cores for checksums, compression and encryption. We deliberately do not use SMR drives — they collapse during random write accesses and recoveries. 3 configurations cover the range from €165.54$192.03 to €879.00$1,019.64 a month.

Four terms before the models

They appear on every model card of the VAULT series — explained here in a brief sentence each, so the cards below can be read without questions. ENTRONYX CLOUD uses these four terms with the same meaning across all Bare Metal series.

Rack unit (U)
The height measurement of a server rack, 44.45 mm per unit. It determines how much cooling surface and how many drives fit into a chassis.
ECC memory
Memory that detects bit errors itself and corrects single ones, instead of passing the error on to the application.
Uplink
The server's connection to the network. In this series 1 Gbit/s — this is the upper limit, not an average.
Traffic
The monthly volume of transferred data. Here unlimited per model — outbound traffic is neither counted nor billed extra.

ECC in the VAULT series: VAULT-308 registered; VAULT-56 and VAULT-176 unbuffered.

A 4U storage server on a seamlessly dark background, from diagonally above from the front left corner, with the cover pushed back: in the open top section, the hard drives stand upright in sleds in a dense grid, one sled is lifted out and shows the bare, unlabelled top of its drive. At the front a high, perforated bezel with two green status lights, on the side an extended telescopic rail.

3 configurations of the VAULT series

The stated prices apply to the reference location Frankfurt. The location list on each card shows the monthly price for the respective data centre. It already includes the regional factor — the fixed surcharge or discount of a location compared to Frankfurt. The factor is fixed: ENTRONYX CLOUD has neither daily prices nor utilisation surcharges.

Opened 2U server chassis from diagonally above on the workbench: heatsink with copper base over the socket, populated and locked memory banks, fan wall, power supplies with IEC connector at the back, drive bays at the front.
What's inside a node of the VAULT series: 8 to 32 physical cores, up to 64 threads and 32 GB to 256 GB memory. A thread is not a core — two of them share one.

Single-core and multi-core indices are a calculated classification across all 17 Bare Metal models, not a measurement: the single-core index is based on the boost clock according to the manufacturer's specifications and a factor per processor architecture, the multi-core index additionally on the number of threads. The scale of the bars is therefore comparable across series. The index 100 corresponds to one core of the EPYC 9354.

Next to each bar is the index value as a number — the bar only shows the ratio. A bar twice as long means twice as much computing power according to this classification, not twice as fast response times in your application.

Server motherboard from above, memory banks in two banks left and right of the socket, several slots still free.

What VAULT is built for

6 load profiles for which this series is the right platform — each with the reason why.

No substitute for latency-critical databases. That is what the NVMe configurations of FORGE are intended for.

Backup target
Restic, Borg or Veeam repository. Metadata and deduplication index are located on the flash drives, the data blocks on the hard drives.
Ceph/MinIO
OSD or erasure coding nodes. Redundancy is created across multiple nodes; the local RAID array of the drives deliberately remains flat.
Media archive
Raw material and broadcast masters that are rarely read and must never be deleted. Sequential read rates count more than IOPS.
Cold storage
Data with access intervals of weeks to months. Capacity per euro beats any latency optimisation here.
Video archive
Long-term storage for camera and streaming recordings with a continuous sequential write profile and predictable capacity growth.
Compliance retention
Audit-proof storage with WORM lock — written once, then read-only. Retention periods run for years — the hardware must last just as long.

Drive types, recovery and the limits of RAID

Storage density is easy to sell and hard to operate. The decisive factor is not the number on the data sheet, but what happens when a drive fails — and how long the system runs unprotected during this time.

CMR instead of SMR — without exception

All VAULT systems contain enterprise drives with conventional magnetic recording (CMR). Drives with shingled magnetic recording (SMR) are cheaper per terabyte, but collapse during random write accesses and prolong recoveries many times over. For a backup target, this is exactly the worst possible compromise.

From VAULT-176, NVMe drives in the same chassis hold the operating system, metadata and the deduplication index. This keeps the catalogue search fast, while the user data resides on the spinning drives.

Capacity and recovery time. Assumes a continuous sequential read rate of 190 MB/s per drive.
ModelDrivesHDD rawNVMe cacheLargest driveRecovery

VAULT-30814 × HDD + 2 × NVMe308 TB15.36 TB22 TB35 h
The calculation is deliberately optimistic: it assumes an empty system without parallel user access.

Which RAID we recommend

With four drives, RAID 10 — Mirrored stripes is the right choice: From 4 drives. Best combination of IOPS and reliability. The recovery only reads from the mirror partner instead of the entire cluster and hardly loads the other drives.

With eight or more drives, we advise against RAID 5 — Parity. Over one to one and a half days of recovery, a single parity offers too little protection. Instead, place the redundancy one level higher — Ceph or MinIO distribute it across multiple nodes, and a node failure then remains an event without data loss.

For pure operating system drives, RAID 1 — Mirroring remains the simplest and most robust variant. All RAID levels can be configured at no extra charge.

What we monitor

SMART values, reallocation counts and read error rates feed into our monitoring. We replace a drive with an increasing error rate before it fails — the replacement is part of the plan and is not charged separately.

In addition, we recommend a monthly scrub run across the entire cluster. It finds silent read errors as long as the redundancy can still repair them.

What VAULT costs at each location

The region factor reflects the electricity price, capacity and connectivity of the respective location. It applies to the base price, not to add-ons. Term discounts are optional, but not required — without a commitment, you can cancel monthly.
