Certified
SAP nodes

Approved are 4 size classes — HANA S, HANA M, HANA L, HANA XL — and 4 of 5 host classes. Approved means: A test report according to SAP HWCCT, the Hardware Configuration Check Tool from SAP, is available for exactly this configuration. There is none for any other combination — and without a report, the memory commitment does not apply.

Nodes from €2,313.00$2,683.08 net per month, host and licence, excluding datastore — the shared storage cluster where the volumes reside. Licensing is per host, not per core. Approval is possible at 3 locations: anywhere the certified datastore is available alongside the host class.

The configuration is certified, not the product

A node is only considered accepted when an HWCCT report is available for exactly this configuration: host, memory, datastore and volume layout — the distribution of storage across the three HANA file systems — in the combination in which they are delivered. You receive the report upon handover and again after every change.

  • Acceptance protocol according to SAP HWCCT per node
  • Storage KPIs contractually guaranteed instead of just measured
  • 1:1 mapping of vCPU to physical core, no memory overcommit
  • Separate volumes for /hana/data, /hana/log and /hana/shared

The maintenance window is the previously agreed period during which work may be performed on a node; outside of this, it is not touched. The licence is tied to the host, not the core count. A node with 128 cores costs the same in terms of licensing as one with 32 — unlike under vSphere and HCI, which bill per core.

Four identical server nodes stacked in the rack, each with its own labelled inspection sticker on the bezel.
Exactly 4 sizes are accepted: HANA S on PC-M64 · HANA M on PC-M64i · HANA L on PC-L128 · HANA XL on PC-X256. If someone runs a different combination, it is not forbidden — it is just not documented: the guaranteed storage KPI of ENTRONYX CLOUD does not apply to it until a new report is available.

One host class is not approved

The delivered configuration is always approved, not a single metric. Therefore, the justification is per class and not as a general clock limit.

PC-S32

PC-S

3 Gbit uplink without a separate storage fabric. Shared NFS or iSCSI datastores are not permitted on this class so that replication and guest traffic do not share the same line. Without a shared datastore, there is no automatic HA restart.

The class designates the physical configuration of the host. This determines the volume cut, the allocatable database size and the number of vCPUs, i.e. the virtual processor cores — without any leeway, because the SAP stack does not allow compute or memory overprovisioning.

Why allocatable memory is below the class designation

The hypervisor — the virtualisation layer of the host — occupies a fixed base plus a share of the configuration. With PC-M64, 232 GB remain for the guest out of 256 GB. The SAP volume rules still calculate based on the physical configuration — this is how SAP defines them. The guaranteed database size of 128 GB is significantly lower, because HANA needs the second half of the memory for merges, intermediate results and temporary tables.

The price per chip shows HANA S including location factor, net and without datastore. Although SAP-capable host classes are available in Berlin, the certified datastore NVMe Performance is not — certification is not possible there.

Three volumes, three rules, no interpretation

SAP dictates the layout, not us. The three file systems follow directly from the memory of the class — and thus also the amount that must be ordered on the certified datastore.

/hana/data
1 × RAM
The column store is written completely to the data volume at the savepoint. It therefore holds the entire memory.
/hana/log
min(0.5 × RAM; 512 GB)
The redo log — the protocol of all write operations for the restart — is overwritten cyclically. More than the cap does not provide an additional recovery point, but costs space on the most expensive class.
/hana/shared
min(1 × RAM; 1,024 GB)
Binaries, traces and profiles. Grows with the instance, but not with the data — hence the cap.
Database up to
RAM ÷ 2
The column store may occupy around half. HANA needs the other half for the delta merge — the incorporation of new write operations into the column store —, for intermediate results and temporary tables.

What the volume layout costs on the datastore

The certified datastore NVMe Performance has a minimum commitment of 2,048 GB at €0.1090$0.1264 per GB and month. 3 of the 4 classes are below this with their volume layout and therefore pay the same minimum amount — from HANA S to HANA L the storage price does not change. Only HANA XL exceeds it with 2,560 GB.

Acceptance costs density — here is the calculation

The SAP stack lowers the vCPU limit to 1:1: one virtual CPU per physical core, not per thread. This removes a significant portion of the placement reserve on the same bare metal that the same host class would be allowed to carry under any other stack.

Limits of the four approved host classes

PC-M64
One socket, one NUMA node: VMs over 232 GB RAM no longer fit on this class. For wider single VMs, PC-L128 or PC-X256 is the right fit.
PC-M64i
Live migration is only guaranteed between hosts of the same CPU generation. A mixed cluster of PC-M64 (AMD) and PC-M64i (Intel) does not migrate during operations.
PC-L128
The boost ends at 3.75 GHz — the class wins on width, not on clock speed. Loads that depend on single threads run faster on PC-S32 with 5.7 GHz.
PC-X256
Two sockets mean two NUMA nodes. VMs over 480 GB RAM or over 192 vCPU exceed one node and lose around 12% memory bandwidth — with licences per core, this host also pays for 384 cores.

The evidence on which the acceptance is based

SAP checks four metrics in the HWCCT run. The limit is what we contractually guarantee; the measured value comes from the acceptance run on the certified datastore and merely proves it. If the configuration or datastore changes, it is measured again.

Metrics from the SAP HWCCT acceptance run: guaranteed limit and measured value on Datastore NVMe Performance
Metricguaranteedmeasured

Log write latency, 16 KB≤ 1000 µs420 µs

Data read throughput, 16 MB≥ 400 MB/s3060 MB/s

The volumes are not located in the node, but in the cluster: connected via NVMe/TCP or NFS 4.1. Triply replicated across two fire zones of the location — which is why the failure of an enclosure does not require recovery, and why the connection determines the 0.4 ms guaranteed above.

Four datastore classes can be booked, one is accepted

Datastore NVMe Performance

All 4 classes can be created under the SAP stack — this makes sense for templates, exports and powered-off secondary systems. The volumes /hana/data, /hana/log and /hana/shared of a productive instance, however, belong exclusively on Datastore NVMe Performance; any other class suspends the acceptance.

Limit of the guarantee for the other classes

The limit of Datastore NVMe Performance is stated above in the note on the IOPS guarantee — it is not repeated here.

Datastore NVMe Standard
From 24 concurrently active VMs on a datastore, the guaranteed latency drops from 0.9 ms to 1.4 ms. Larger environments are therefore split across multiple datastores.
Datastore Capacity
The NVMe cache covers 8% of the datastore size. Working sets beyond this pass through to the HDD tier; the 4 ms latency guarantee then no longer applies.
Datastore Archive
Not approved as an operational datastore. Running VMs must not reside here — the class accommodates powered-off guests, templates and OVA exports.

Maintenance is not on our calendar, but on yours

An accepted node is not maintained on a rolling basis in a fixed weekly window like a vSphere or HCI cluster. Every change to firmware, hypervisor or datastore affects the acceptance — which is why each one is agreed individually.

Limit per operations level

Platform operations
Escalation: NOC → Platform engineer on duty → Infrastructure on-call management
Firmware maintenance requires a host evacuation. Without a second host in the cluster, this means downtime of up to 45 minutes per maintenance window.
Platform and guest operations
Escalation: NOC → System engineer on duty → Named Service Manager → Infrastructure on-call management
Guest patches are only applied to images delivered by ENTRONYX. Custom-built images remain your responsibility and are excluded from the availability commitment.
Full operations
Escalation: Fixed phone number → Technical Account Manager → Operations Management → Technical Management
Application operations include the services listed in the operations manual. In-house developments not listed are monitored but not modified.

Determine size class, schedule acceptance

The class determines the volume layout, datastore and price. The acceptance report is generated on the delivered configuration and is provided to you upon handover. Changing the class, location or datastore requires a new acceptance — which is why it is worth calculating the layout together once.
